I've been thinking a lot about
Cole this week. (To read more about his story click on his name in the sentence before or go to http://beatingepilepsy.blogspot.com). I became friends with Cole's mom when she was a member of the Orchard 2nd Ward a couple of years ago. I thought I would blog about this today since this family used to be apart of our family ward. Cole is only a few months apart from my Savanna which makes their trial even more close to my heart. Cole has been experiencing seizures since he was about 10 months old. This past week their family traveled to the Cleveland Clinic for Cole to have brain surgery. The surgery went well and their is so much hope that stopping these seizures will help Cole to advance and grow in his little life.
There are so many stories of those around us experiencing hard and difficult things. Our little ward has so many families experiencing health issues, financial troubles, or other trials. As I thought and prayed for their family this week I was overcome with a peaceful feeling of love from our Heavenly Father. I found a talk by Elder James B. Martino Of the Seventy titled "All Things Work Together for Good". A couple of quotes really stood out to me.
He says "We may never know in this life why we face what we do, but we can feel confident that we can grow from the experience." Each of us will face trials and tests,...it is how we react to those difficulties that will determine our success and happiness. Each of us will face adversity no matter where we are. We are taught in the scriptures that there “must needs be … an opposition in all things.” We will each face times of difficulty, and the question is not when we will face them but how we face them."
"Now, I realize that it is much easier to look back when a trial is over and see what we have learned from our experience, but the challenge is to gain that eternal perspective while we are going through our tests. To some, our trials may not seem great, but to each of us who are passing through these experiences, the trials are real and require us to humble ourselves before God and learn from Him."
I am overcome with gratitude for a loving Heavenly Father who knows us. Their family has been such an example to me to really lean on the Lord and trust in Him during our trials. I hope we can all take the example of Cole's family and the words of Elder Martino into our own lives to help us live through and overcome our own trials.
